"They Only Spoke to Each Other—Then One Died, and the Other Said ‘I Am Free’"

June and Jennifer Gibbons, known as The Silent Twins, refused to speak with anyone but each other. When Jennifer died under mysterious circumstances in 1993, June responded with the words, "I am free at last."

Born to a Caribbean family in 1963, identical twins June and Jennifer Gibbons moved with their family to Haverfordwest, Wales, shortly after birth.

From an early age, they developed a rapid, private language that others couldn’t understand.

At 14, they were separated at boarding schools to encourage independence, but both became catatonic until they were reunited.

Afterward, they spent years isolated in their room, creating stories and plays about crime and se*uality, which they self-published but gained little attention.

Eventually, they ventured outside but only spoke to each other, and soon escalated into criminal acts, including arson and theft. This behavior led to their commitment to Broadmoor Hospital for 14 years.

In 1993, they were transferred to a lower-security facility, Caswell Clinic. However, on arrival, Jennifer was found unresponsive and later died of sudden heart inflammation, with no toxins found.

Shortly after her death, June expressed relief, saying, "I’m free at last."

Following Jennifer's passing, June began speaking to others and reintegrated into society, eventually living what she describes as a "normal life."
